The BOLT Initiative: Reimagining Professional Learning for Blended and Online Teachers

Teacher professional development and professional learning are two distinct activities that have been previously tied to time and place constraints. However, through digital technologies a shift is occurring to ongoing professional learning options such as the Blended and Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT) initiative. Through a partnership between the Centre for Distance Education at Athabasca University and the Alberta Distance Learning Centre(ADLC) nine professional learning modules were redesigned and delivered to a pilot group of ADLC teachers. The BOLT modules, created from graduate Masters of Education courses, weave together the theory and practice of teaching in digital spaces to K12 students. The presenters, including the BOLT participants, will summarize the learning experienced in the professional learning modules and how it relates to personal, professional and evidence-based practices of using digital strategies with K-12 students. By experiencing such situations as learners themselves, the BOLT students as practicing educators share their own lived experiences of what it means to learn and teach with digital flexibility and how learning from these modules have enhanced their ongoing development of digital pedagogy.
