Technology and artificial intelligence are advancing at a tremendous pace. Our education systems cannot escape the 4th industrial revolution, which is just starting. Although schools will not go the way of the dodo, at least in the near future, they will have to adapt rapidly. And what will come of the teaching profession as automation threatens so many jobs? Will artificial intelligence surpass human intelligence in school? We already have robots and bots designed to teach and serve as personal assistants; could they someday replace teachers? Some students have been doing without trained teachers for a long time, and now some schools are experimenting entirely without the latter. This presentation looks at the technological and social forces that will forever change the structure of schools and the role of teachers, especially those that distance teaching and learning. (This session is offered in French Friday at 11:15)
